Elena Kihlman graduated from Master of Art at Fashion and Textile Department of Helsinki University of Art & Design. In 2002, she registered her firm, EK-Design, and since 2004 she has designed and produced textile furnishings bearing her own brand. In 2006, she moved to Italy where she set up her studio and has carried out her activity since. Her creations derive from attentive analysis of fabrics as well as from ancient silk weaving techniques. Her works are based on silk organza and linen: they are felted and hand-weaved with merino wool, resulting in sinuous shapes and metaphoric designs and successfully combining the delicacy of silk and linen with the heat of wool. Transparencies and light- and- shadow effects in the fabric evoke ancient atmospheres and, at the same time, project a future space, expanding beyond any bounds of physical presence.
